Valerie and I love looking at mountains! When we travel it seems that we always wind up someplace where there are impressive mountains nearby. Once, our travels took us to Seattle and we got a chance to see beautiful Mt. Rainer as we flew into the city. The interesting thing to me was how much smaller that great mountain looked from high above!
You know it got me to thinking; our perspective makes all the difference in how we view spiritual mountains too! Even the biggest ones don't look all that big when you're able to look at them from above. What kind of mountain are you facing right now? Maybe the finances look huge, or the obstacles, or the opposition, that medical situation, or maybe what's happening at work, or at school, or at home, or in a relationship. Looking up at it, it's enough to overwhelm you! You need to look at that mountain from above.
I believe this was what Paul was talking about when he urged the early Christians to change their perspective. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Col. 3:1-2) The truth of the matter is that any mountain looks huge when you’re standing at the bottom looking up. But when you view it from a higher perspective it looks a whole lot smaller. The good news is that we can view our spiritual mountains from this higher perspective when we chose to focus on the size of our God, rather than the size of our problems!
Now you may say, "Well, I pray about things but it doesn't help." Let me simply remind you who it is you are praying to - who you're with when you pray! Our God is the Creator of heaven and earth; He's the Creator of everything and everyone in your situation. In other words, when you pray, you are standing in the throne room of God! When you look at your mountain from the throne room of God, you can see things from a whole new perspective!
Haven’t you been looking at your mountain from down below long enough? Let me encourage you to go to God in prayer, from the throne room of God, get above that spiritual mountain and see how small it is compared to the Lord who stands ready to conquer that mountain for you.
