Time and Opportunity

Updated: Sep 20, 2022

My wife and I have sat stunned as we’ve watched the news reports of young people with bright futures ahead of them tragically taken away in automobile accidents! That was the case this past week as we watched the news and a young person that we knew personally was killed in a hit-and-run accident. Incidents like this really make us stop and contemplate the uncertainty of life, as well as the importance of making the most of the time and opportunities we have in this world!

You know, it got me thinking about what the Bible says about the uncertainty of our life in this present world. James writes:

“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” – James 4:14

As I reflect on so many of the strange twists and turns in my own life, I realize how accurate James’ description of life really is. All of us live in the present moment, yet we act as if we have some type of guarantee that the plans and dreams we make for the future will unfold according to our plans!

The Bible simply reminds us that tomorrow is not promised to any of us, and that the wisest thing that we can do is to take advantage of the time and opportunity that God places before us today.

What opportunity has God put before you today? Maybe you need to mend a broken relationship or break a bad habit. Maybe there is something that you’ve been meaning to do, such as a ministry that you’ve been planning to get involved in but keep putting off. Perhaps you’ve recognized the need to make a spiritual change and obey the gospel of Christ. It’s an opportunity that’s before you today, one that isn’t promised for tomorrow!

None of us really know what tomorrow holds for us, but we can find hope in the moment of today! Our heavenly Father extends to all a wonderful opportunity to unite with Christ and live with the assurance that He holds not only today, but all our tomorrows in His capable hands.
