THE COMING JUDGMENT

Facing Eternity: Reflect on life's purpose

Like many of you Valerie and I were sadden by the news of the tragic, untimely death of one of our beloved sports hero’s a short while ago. By all accounts of the people who knew him, he was a genuine and sincere person who was trying to make a difference in the lives of others. Now you’d expect someone of his notoriety and status to be kind of huffy and arrogant. All indications suggest that was not the case with him; he was just a down to earth guy who seemed to be more concerned about others than he was about himself!

You know, it got me to thinking about how God has made death to be the great equalizer of all human beings. John said,

“And I saw the dead small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works..”

(Rev. 20:12)

Contrary to what you may see on some bumper stickers, “He who dies with the most toys, doesn’t win.” The bible tells us that what matters most in death is where you stood with God in life! John helps us to understand that death is not the final door. Each of us must and surely will, stand before the God of creation to be judged on how we have lived our life. There are no exemptions and no exceptions to this fact. John says that the small and the great in life are on an equal footing in death and what will be important then is not how much fame, notoriety or prestige one had, but whether or not a person obeyed the things written in God’s book.

Well, what about you today? Are you living your life with an eye toward eternity or are you still trying to gather up the most toys? The good news is that each of us can make sure that we’ll spend eternity with God. If you haven’t aligned your life with the things God says in His book, you can start the process today by obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ!
