Spring's Promise: The Joy of Seasons and Baseball's Return

Spring Season at Pinnacle

With pleasant, mild winters, Arkansans likely can’t understand how long and cold and miserable and endless winters are in places like, say, Michigan. But generations of Michiganders would find hope as Spring Training for the Detroit Tigers would begin in Lakeland, Florida.

This hope would be given voice by legendary Tigers announcer, Ernie Harwell, who would begin his first broadcast of the season by quoting the Bible:

For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land” (Song of Solomon 2:11-12).

I smile every time I think of this.

It is but one of God’s marvelous blessings that we experience the changing of the seasons. And, as great as it was when pitchers and catchers report, it is better still when the tulips, daffodils, roses and azaleas burst into dazzling colors.

Walk around this week and take in this wondrous sight.
