Not Just a Piece of Paper

Haven’t you read that at the beginning the Creator “made them male and female,” and said, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh”? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.

― Matthew 19: 4-6

Our society has disregarded Jesus’ words for a generation as divorce has become so commonplace that it’s almost more surprising when a couple stays married than splits.

And lately, folks are going to work undermining the rest of Jesus’ admonition by not letting God join them together in marriage in the first place.

For decades, the number of people avoiding marriage altogether has grown steadily. They aren’t foregoing a sexual relationship, or cohabitation, or having children… just marriage. Because “marriage is just a piece of paper….”

Yeah, right.

If you aren’t ready to make a commitment, then you aren’t ready for living together, sex, or procreation. Period. End of Sentence.

So recently, when a poor couple wandered into the church with a marriage license in hand, looking for someone to sign it and marry them, I was glad to do it. Because it’s not just a piece of paper; it is a promise. One that God expects us to keep.
