Day of the Lord

Valerie will tell you that just about every afternoon you will find me out in the yard trying to water and salvage what is left of our lawn. While the front yard seems to be holding on, we’ve given up on the back yard because it takes the full brunt of the sun. We’ve come to the conclusion that it’s just too hot for anything to survive back there!

You know, it got me to thinking about our spiritual survival. While we’re all concerned about trying to beat the heat of summer, there’s a much greater concern that we should give our attention to. Peter wrote about it centuries ago in order to help each of us make preparations for where we will spend eternity! The bible says, “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise and the elements shall melt away with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” (II Pet. 3:10)

Now if you think its hot now, just imagine it being so hot that physical structures begin to melt away! All the beautiful homes in Little Rock, the sky scrapers downtown, even the scenic parks and lakes all consumed in the heat of fire! Where would you run to escape the heat? I just imagine that there will be some who will try to hang their hopes for survival on science or technology? There will be some that will rely on the government or in their wealth to provide a way of escape in that awesome day. However, there will be no escape for those who have not made their eternal preparation by obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

That’s the point of Peter’s writing; he is simply reminding us that our only hope for surviving the heat of that great day is in Christ. He wants to remind us all of the certainty of the Lord’s return and that God wants everyone to be prepared for this coming day by taking advantage of His long suffering by obeying His plan of salvation today!

Hopefully, this summer heat wave will let up shortly and the cooling rains will soon begin to fall. But if you’re not prepared for eternity, you need to consider that the great day of the Lord WILL come, how will you survive the heat?
